Magnus Heitzler

Magnus Heitzler holds a Bachelor of Sciences in Geosciences from the University of Freiburg, Germany, a Master of Science in Geomatics from the University of Potsdam, Germany, and a Doctor of Sciences in Geomatics from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His research revolves around the development and application of computational methods for the Geosciences with an emphasis on Visualization and Machine Learning.

Deep Learning for Cartographic Terrain Shading

Hand-crafted shaded relief is an effective yet tedious method to depict terrain on topographic maps. Convolutional neural networks trained with a large set of hand-drawn examples can create imagery that is strikingly similar to expressive hand-drawn shaded relief art.
